Although a court order recently banned the number of commercial camps operating in Kheerganga, its popularity has hardly waned. During the trek from Kasol, you will get to see the raw nature flourishing in the valley. Kasol and nearby villages like Tosh and Malana are places where people live with respect to nature. DETAILS abo ABOUT KHEERGANGA TREK:-
If the Lord resides here then Kheerganga (Khirganga) will be His seat. This valley is the crown jewel of all the other treks around Kasol.Kheerganga is the most popular of the Kasol treks.It is a 7-8 hour hike to the hot springs located at an altitude of 2950 m. Or after tackling 13,000 feet of gritty terrain, you’ll reach the hot spring of Kheerganga. Take a bath in hot water and all your worries and ailments will go away The trek starts from Barshai. We reach Barzani by road from Kasol. The actual journey of Kheerganga starts from there. A road leads from Barshani towards Tosh village,3 km away from Barshaini. A day hike to Kheerganga is possible but not practical or advisable. If you are an expert trekker then definitely you can go for it, just start early. The total distance of the Kheerganga trek is 12-13 km, irrespective of the route you take.
TREKKING ROUTES TO KHEERGANGA:-
There are two routes from Barshaini for Kheerganga Trek Barshaini is a small village with a taxi stand, some very basic accommodation options, and dhabas. A barely motorable road leads from here to Tosh which is a little over 2 km from Barshaini. A hydroelectric project is under construction here which has affected the beauty of this place. It is expected that much of it will be restored once the plant is commissioned and the reservoir is built. 1)From the bridge of Barshaini, turn right and go to the village of Kalga. This route through dense forests is a bit lengthy but offers easy climbs and is suitable for beginners and occasional trekkers.
2)The second route goes through Nathan village and you have to take the left from the bridge at Barshaini. It’s a shorter route and a more scenic route but quite a bit rough in places so it’s tough.
This Kheerganga trek route is moderate but not recommended for people with heart conditions. If you start your trek from Barshani before noon then you reach Kheerganga by sunset where you camp here for the night. Kheerganga is not a village, but you can find temporary accommodation and camps here. Since there is no electricity, tandoors are offered in the dining tents to keep you warm for a few stays. Establishments operate on generators so living and getting good food can be quite expensive. Make sure you book your trek with an experienced operator so that you can get good service while you are here. Temporarily commercial permanent camp structures are not allowed here as per a recent court order. As an alternative Rudra Nag, a few kilometers before Kheerganga serves as a night campsite. There are many cafes and tea houses in Kheerganga and of course, there is a natural hot spring called Parvati Kund. The last bus from Barshaini to Bhuntar leaves between 2 PM and 4 PM. Check at a taxi stand or Dhaba for exact timings.
FOOD & STAY DURING KHEERGANGA TREK:-
In Kasol you will find a street lined with restaurants serving exotic cuisine, most of them Israeli. The increasing number of tourists from Israel is the real reason for the popularity of Israeli cuisine. You can also find German and Chinese restaurants. Be brave and get your breakfast from Israel, lunch from Germany, and dinner from China You will not regret it. Put on your jacket, step into your trekking shoe, grab that trekking pole and start your journey from the valley where God finds himself difficult to leave.
BEST TIME FOR KHEERGANGA TREK:-
One of the reasons why the Kasol and Kheerganga trek is so popular is its nearly year-round accessibility. Kheerganga is accessible for most of the year, except for a few weeks during the peak winter season. During monsoon, the Kheerganga trek becomes difficult. The trail is still open for experienced trekkers. The best time to trek is from April to November where the best months are April/May and September/October.
IS KHEERGANGA TREK OPEN NOW?:-
After the order of the government, there is some doubt about whether the Kheerganga track will be operational or not. The trek is very much current and not restricted. Yes, overnight camping in Kheerganga is no longer done by most operators, and Rudranag near Kheerganga serves as an overnight campsite. Nothing has affected the beauty or feel of this trek. You still go to Kheerganga but it is a one-day hike. The camping experience still remains the same amidst the pristine natural beauty under the stars in the Himalayas. The trek continues even in December and January as camping is no longer taking place in Kheerganga. Trekking to Kheerganga is done during the day and if the weather conditions are very bad then it is done to the point where it is possible
