CONDUCT RESEARCH
Do your research about the responsibilities and day-to-day activities of a new job. Talking to your classmates, doing informational interviews, and conducting online research are all great ways to find out more. This research should also include looking into opportunities within your organization. You can make a career change by staying in your current job, where you have built trust and authority, but taking on a new role. Dawn said that functional changes in students’ companies are some of the most rewarding career moves she’s seen.
CREATE A CLEAR STRATEGY
Once you have determined that the product or service is a match, it is time to develop a targeted strategy. The extent of the strategy will depend on how significant it is. Dawn said, “Create and understand a plan. Make sure you are clear about the steps involved, obstacles, and available resources. It is important to be realistic about the timeline, as this will not happen overnight. Sometimes you may need to make a stepping stone to get to the land you want.
Be a smart networker
Dawn encourages students to leverage their network to open doors and reach out to decision-makers. The Wharton network is so large that alumni and students in your area will be found. Reaching out to these individuals is part of the strategy to establish relationships. Dawn said that research shows that networking is one of the best things you can do for success in a career shift.”
Kent suggested that you use the network to have conversations so you can determine if this is the right move for you. You will fail at least once because not all jobs are right for you. You can use both the Wharton network and the EMBA-specific network.
THINK ABOUT BRAND
Dawn recommends that you create a resume tailored to your target market and have a presence on social media. She said that your brand should be evident in everything you do, from how you present yourself online to how your resume looks and how you present yourself online. Wharton offers programs to assist EMBA students, including resume workshops and LinkedIn workshops.
Nikhil said that the career team uses a holistic approach to how to position oneself to achieve long-term career goals. He attended workshops on topics because, improved his professional brand, LinkedIn profile, and resume.
